The microbiology division provides services for the quantification, identification and characterization of specific microbial agents, as well as tests for the evaluation of preservatives (challenge test), and for the assessment of antibacterial and antifungal efficacy and mutagenic activity.

Microbiological analyses

  • Microbiology testing on raw materials and finished products: total bacterial/fungal counts according to COSMETICS EUROPE, ISO (21149 e 16212) and European Pharmacopoeia/USP methods;
  • Detection of specific bacteria according to COLIPA, ISO (21150, 22717,22718, 18416) e European Pharmacopoeia/USP methods;
  • Preservative Effectiveness Test: challenge test according COSMETICS EUROPE, PCPC, and European Pharmacopoeia, FDA, ISO 11930, USP methods;
  • use test and RDV evaluation to determine the PAO (Period After Opening);
  • Validation of microbiological analysis protocols on specific matrices according to European Pharmacopoeia/USP/ISO;
  • Determination of antimicrobial activity on dermatologically relevant strands, such as Propionibacterium acnes, Staphylococcus aureus and epidermidis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans, dermatophytes;
  • Evaluation of the Minimal Inhibiting Concentration  (MIC) through turbidimetry  and contact inhibition;
  • Determination of antibacterial activity for textiles according to UNI EN ISO 20645 and JIS Z 2801 methods;
  • Evaluation of microfungal activity   according to UNI EN 14119;
  • Evaluation of bacterial adhesion vs. mammalian cells;
  • Environmental evaluation of microbial air dispersion through sample collection with SAS SUPER IAQ "Surface Air System" instruments;
  • Environmental evaluation of microbial contamination on surfaces in production lines, machinery and laboratories;
  • Identification and quantification of Legionella contamination according to UNI EN ISO 11731-2.
